Study Findings:

Icon Type

  • Children preferred icons from real lie situations.

Icon Size

  • When presented with four icons, 63% of all children selected the largest icon possible.

Font Type

  • When given the option to select between serif and script fonts, over half of the children chose the script fonts.

Font Size

  • Children responded best to font sizes between 14pt and 22pt

 

Design Recommendations:

Age Appropriatness

  • Minimize the amount of information presented to the child and focus on the task at hand.

Dexterity

  • Provide large and well defined hit areas for the children to select.

Literacy

  • Use consistent and age apprpriate terms throughout the interface.

Familiarity

  • Integrate familiar methods and metaphors.
